What are Campaigns For? The Role of Persuasion in Electoral Law and Politics

What are Campaigns For? The Role of Persuasion in Electoral Law and Politics by James A Gardner

English | 2009 | ISBN: 0195392612 | 232 pages | PDF | 1 MB

Election campaigns ought to be serious occasions in the life of a democratic polity. For citizens of a democracy, an election is a time to take stock-to reexamine our beliefs; to review our understanding of our own interests; to ponder the place of those interests in the larger social order; and to contemplate, and if necessary to revise, our understanding of how our commitments are best translated into governmental policy-or so we profess to believe.

Americans, however, are haunted by the fear that our election campaigns fall far short of the ideal to which we aspire. The typical modern American election campaign seems crass, shallow, and unengaging. The arena of our democratic politics seems to lie in an uncomfortable chasm between our political ideals and everyday reality.

What Are Campaigns For? is a multidisciplinary work of legal scholarship that examines the role of legal institutions in constituting the disjunction between political ideal and reality. The book explores the contemporary American ideal of democratic citizenship in election campaigns by tracing it to its historical sources, documenting its thorough infiltration of legal norms, evaluating its feasibility in light of the findings of empirical social science, and testing it against the requirements of democratic theory.

Introduction to Homeland Defense and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA): The U.S. Military"s Role to... (repost)

Introduction to Homeland Defense and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA): The U.S. Military"s Role and Defend by Bert B. Tussing, Robert McCreight

English | 2014 | ISBN: 1466595671 | 222 pages | PDF | 2,6 MB

The application of our Armed Forces within the states and territories of the United States is far from intuitive. The challenges of defending the country against assaults within the homeland are much more complex than engaging our enemies on foreign soil. Likewise, the introduction of the military’s appreciable capabilities in response to disasters, be they natural or manmade, comes with authorities and restrictions reflective of an American ethos that will always hold those forces as the servants of the people, never their overseers. Introduction to Homeland Defense and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA): The U.S. Military’s Role and Defend examines the requirements and regulations that guide the utilization of our forces in the domestic environment.

Topics include:

The importance of the distinctions between homeland security, homeland defense, and Defense Support of Civil Authorities as they pertain to both authorities and responsibilities

The deliberately subservient position of the military to civil authorities when engaged in response and recovery operations following a disaster

The unique relationship between the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard in a mutually supportive effort that bridges requirements between defense on the high seas and law enforcement in territorial waters

The air defense mission over the United States, orchestrating manned aircraft, unmanned aircraft, and cruise missiles against threats of the same nature

The exceptional challenges that would be associated with the application of land forces in a defense mission on American soil

The development of the CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) Enterprise as a function of the nation’s focus on preventing, responding to and recovering from a Weapons of Mass Destruction attack

New challenges emerging in the domestic environment that will call for the application of military resources, to include the Arctic, complex catastrophes, and cybersecurity issues

Motivating Cooperation and Compliance with Authority: The Role of Institutional Trust (repost)

Brian H. Bornstein, "Motivating Cooperation and Compliance with Authority: The Role of Institutional Trust"

English | 2015 | ISBN-10: 3319161504 | 220 pages | pdf | 3 MB

This volume explores the various ways that trust is thought about in contemporary society and studied by social scientists. Specifically, it focuses on the role of trust as a major contributing factor in compliance with authority. Cross-disciplinary research findings by leading experts link new ways of looking at trust and its measurement to emerging areas for understanding and fostering cooperation with such entities as governments, law enforcement, the courts, and scientists. These multiple viewpoints help to explain why trust remains hard to define across disciplines, as chapter authors explore the role of morality in compliance, political implications of trust, and key trust-related concepts such as legitimacy, justice, and risk. In addition, the book explores the nuanced relationship between institutional and interpersonal trust.

The Role of Bacteria in Urology

The Role of Bacteria in Urology

Springer | Medicine | October 18, 2015 | ISBN-10: 3319177311 | 102 pages | pdf | 2 mb

by Dirk Lange (Editor), Ben Chew (Editor)

Different bacterial resistance mechanisms are outlined to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the different mechanisms though which bacteria resist common antibiotics

This book will discuss signs and symptoms of urosepsis to help the reader recognise and identify patients suffering from it

The text will feature diagrams and tables illustrating different pathogenic mechanisms used by common uropathogens to give a better understanding of how bacteria infect the urinary tract

From the Back Cover

This useful book addresses the pathogenic, therapeutic and preventative roles of bacteria in urology. The authors look at the basic mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis that lead to disease, as well as the non-pathogenic mechanisms that contribute to the prevention and treatment of patients. The guidelines from the major international associations are also covered, including the recommended antibiotic treatments for urinary tract infections.

The Role of Bacteria in Urology brings together basic science and clinical views in one book to give scientists and clinicians an even field that may raise ideas for future collaborative research.

About the Author

Dr. Dirk Lange is a microbiologist who earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario) on understanding the role of the capsular polysaccharide in the pathogenesis of Campylobacter jejuni.

Dr. Lange completed his post-doctoral fellowship at The Stone Centre at VGH with Dr. Ben Chew, where he contributed significantly to the area of urinary biomaterial design, providing a basic science perspective to understanding ureteral stent related morbidity. Due to his significant contributions to the research program at the Stone Centre, Dr. Lange was recruited to the Department of Urologic Sciences as an Assistant Professor in 2011, and is also the Director of Basic Science Research at the Stone Centre.

Dr. Ben Chew specializes in the surgical and medical treatment of kidney stone disease. Dr. Chew’s research focuses on how kidney stones form and in particular how we absorb certain compounds and minerals through the intestinal tract. By altering how we absorb compounds, his research hopes to be able to change a patient’s risk factors for developing more stones.

In 2017, Dr. Chew will be the Co-President of the World Congress of Endourology international meeting to be held in Vancouver, BC. He teaches other urologists internationally with lectures and hands-on laboratories as part of an initiative, The Stone Institute, to help improve the care of patients all over the world.

The Role of Revelation in the World"s Religions [Repost]

The Role of Revelation in the World"s Religions by Beverly Moon

English | Oct. 21, 2010 | ISBN: 0786449489 | 233 Pages | PDF | 979.05 KB

The human reception of divine messages, known as revelation, has often played a central role in world religions. This study explores how spirituality and the personal experience of the divine has been expressed and preserved in various religious traditions. The phenomenon of revelation is explored and interpreted through examples from across the religious spectrum, and six different types of revelation are posited: visions and voices, divination, spirit journey, spirit mediation, mystical union, and divine incarnation.
