As usual, some of the contributions to this 44th Séminaire de Probabilités were presented during the Journées de Probabilités held in Dijon in June 2010. The remainder were spontaneous submissions or were solicited by the editors. The traditional and historical themes of the Séminaire are covered, such as stochastic calculus, local times and excursions, and martingales. Some subjects already touched on in the previous volumes are still here: free probability, rough paths, limit theorems for general processes (here fractional Brownian motion and polymers), and large deviations.

Lastly, this volume explores new topics, including variable length Markov chains and peacocks. We hope that the whole volume is a good sample of the main streams of current research on probability and stochastic processes, in particular those active in France.

Deep Purple - Die Geschichte einer Band

Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple – die Trinität dieser Bands wird meist genannt, wenn zur Debatte steht, wer den Hardrock oder gar das Genre des Heavy Metal erfunden hat, sofern denn ein Genre erfunden werden kann und sich nicht vielmehr aus einer ziemlich unübersichtlichen Gemengelage zeit- und musikgeschichtlicher und vor allem zufälliger persönlicher Konstellationen entwickelt. Die Bedeutung von Led Zeppelin für die Entfaltung eines neuen musikalischen Stils und einer neuartigen musikalischen Sichtweise auf die Welt ist weithin akzeptiert, unzählige Veröffentlichungen dokumentieren das. Und auch Black Sabbath dürfen sich einer nicht nur in bestimmten Subkulturen verbreiteten, zuweilen kultischen Verehrung sicher sein. Ihre Geschichte ist ordentlich aufgearbeitet. Anders verhält sich das mit Deep Purple, deren Album Deep Purple In Rock (1970) prägender und bedeutender war als das meiste, was wir aus den frühen Siebzigerjahren kennen. Deep Purple wurden in der Folge zu einer der einflussreichsten, innovativsten, erfolgreichsten und interessantesten Bands der Rockgeschichte, und so ist es siebenunddreißig Jahre nach ihrer Gründung endlich an der Zeit, die Geschichte dieser ebenso großen wie zuzeiten scheiternden und selbstzerstörerischen Gruppe zu erzählen. Jürgen Roth und Michael Sailer legen mit Deep Purple – Die Geschichte einer Band die erste deutschsprachige Darstellung über Deep Purple vor – mit dem Anspruch, alles, was wesentlich war und ist, zu berücksichtigen, ohne sich im Meer der Fakten zu verlieren, erzählend, abschweifend, einfühlend und auch distanziert, wo es trotz aller Freude an oder gar Liebe zu dieser Musik geboten erscheint. Und nicht zuletzt dürfen die komischen Irrungen und die Demütigungen, die sich die Mitglieder dieser „Supergroup“ gegenseitig zufügten oder die ihnen die Maschinerie des Rockbusiness zugefügt hat, nicht fehlen. In einem Buch, das die Einzigartigkeit dieser Band aus den musikgeschichtlichen Kontexten heraus verständlich machen will.
